{"id":1517,"date":"2024-05-29T17:50:13","date_gmt":"2024-05-29T16:50:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thomaslancaster.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1517"},"modified":"2024-05-29T18:42:11","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T17:42:11","slug":"the-proficient-use-of-ai-in-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thomaslancaster.co.uk\/blog\/the-proficient-use-of-ai-in-education\/","title":{"rendered":"The Proficient Use of AI in Education"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The <strong>use <\/strong>of AI is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not a problem<\/span>.<br>A <strong>lack of proficient use of AI<\/strong> <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may be a problem<\/span>.<\/p>\n<cite>Dr Thomas Lancaster<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This quote is taken from a recent presentation I delivered, which resonated with the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a computer scientist, who both uses AI regularly and supports students to develop AI systems (many of whom have gone on to work with the world&#8217;s largest technology companies), <strong>I view AI as something that cannot be ignored<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is easy to go into a tool that uses generative AI (such as ChatGPT,) type in a prompt, and be fascinated by a response. With the correct prompt, the output can be useful in both educational and workplace settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being able to create prompts and <strong>critically<\/strong> evaluate the quality of the output will be <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">an essential skill<\/span>. It is a skill that we have to ensure that all students have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, <strong>writing a prompt to interface with a simple chatbot <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">does not<\/span> demonstrate AI expertise<\/strong>. It is the type of beginner level skill that we may well expect students to have long before they arrive at university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Future AI systems will have capabilities that we have not considered<\/span>. We will not interface with them solely by creating prompts. Proficient users will be developing and training new models, interfacing with proprietary systems in companies, developing AI output programmatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is the world that we need to be preparing students (and staff) for.
