I came looking for something to validate my experience as an introvert who has just started a full time teaching track position. Your post makes complete sense of it. Your final word of caution is also something I’ve noticed—the rise of the extrovert superstar academic who is constantly tweeting and posting his or her way to fame—not that I’ve anything against it, but it certainly is a change from the stereotypical absent minded professor.

I love teaching but it also takes a lot out of me, and I’m trying to figure out how to maximise the use of my time while respecting my own need to recover from the three hour seminars and consultations (which I greatly enjoy but are also draining). I find it really hard to settle into planning or research after I’ve spent half the day engaging with students—in an odd way it leaves me energised but also unable to settle down to work properly. Any advice would be appreciated!
